Annapurna Base Camp


Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

Meet your guide at Tribhuvan International Airport and transfer to the hotel. Soak in medieval views of Kathmandu Darbar Square and take first impressions of the beautiful town. Discuss the itinerary, explore Thamel’s tourist area with various restaurants, shops, and bakeries, enjoy a welcome dinner with introductions and complete other formalities and check all equipment

Day 2: Sightseeing in Kathmandu Valley

Discover the beautiful Kathmandu’s Valley’s. Uncover a world of mysticism with a visit to Pashupatinath on the bank of the Bagmatiriver where the most Hindu temples and burning ghats of Nepal are situated. We proceed to Boudhanath, where, together with Nepali and Buddhist pilgrims, we circumambulate the whitewashed Buddha Stupa. The sightseeing concludes in the mesmerizing city of Patan- The City of Beauty, a city of fine art and well preserved Buddhist and Hindu culture.

Day 3: Bus Drive to Phedi and Trek to Dhampus

After breakfast, we board a comfortable tourist bus and in about 5 hours reach Phedi (1130 m), from where we start our trek. After a 45 minute steep ascend on a stone stairs, we walk on a moderate trail for  1½ hour to Dhampus (1700 m). Rewarding mountain views of Annapurna II, Annapurna III, and Lamjung await you as you continue on the ridgeline. The astounding Mt. Macchapucchare (6882 m) or “Fish Tail” peak will dominate the skyline for the next few days. Brahmans, Chettris, and Gurungs inhabit the Dhampus area and you will get to experience ethnic Nepal at its best. 

Day 4: Trek to Tolka

The trail traverses through a rhododendron forest and we reach the village of Pothana (1990 m). Here, trekkers have to show their trekking permit the ACA (Annapurna Conservation Ara). We then descend to the pass of Deurali, where we enjoy a well-earned meal and a rewarding view of the Annapurna South (7219 m) and Hinuchili (6434 m). We continue our descent through a forest towards the canyon of the Modi Khola and we later ascend back up through flagstone steps. After 6 hours, we arrive at Tolka (1790 m), a pleasant Gurung village with a wondrous vista of the Annapurna South.

Day 5: Trek Chomrong

The trail descends to the Tiger Khola river and climbs up again through forests onto a ridge. After the ridge, a pleasant walk awaits, as you pass through rice terraces, fields, and streams. The path further leads to Landruk (1620 m), the hot springs of Jhinu Danda (1750 m) and Chomrong (2210 m). Chormrong is the common point for all trails leading to the Annapurna peak and is the last permanent village in the upper Moda Khola river valley. Enjoy a rustic yet enchanting stay in Chomrong, with majestic views of Annapurna South and Hinuchili.

Day 6: Rest Day in Chomrong

Chomrong village has a lot to explore and it’s only fair to stay back a day to rest your muscles. The village is beautiful, with Gurung roots, of the famed Gorkha regiments. All the Gurung villages are located on the ridge tops, with majestic views of the Annapurna South. This village has a typical construction style with slate-roofed neat houses making a complex network of terraces. Eagles and vultures circle the villages as they gain altitude in the afternoon thermals.

Day 7: Trek to Dovan

After Chomrong, the trail descends over a stone staircase and crosses the Chomrong river. We cross the small settlement of Tilche and climb out the side valley. This trail is beautiful with dense forests of bamboo, rhododendron and oak. Lunch is served in Sinuwa (2340 m) and after lunch an ascent begins for about an hour. This ascent is through a bamboo and rhododendron forest. We now enter the upper Modi valley and can see the lodges of Bamboo and Dovan below. We stay overnight at Dovan (2500m)

Day 8- Trek to Deurali

Today we climb along across a landslide and through a forest for about 2 hours to reach Himalaya Hotel, which is located in a deep gorge. After tea at Himalaya, we climb a steep ascent to Hinku Cave (3100 m) – named so, as a huge overhanging rock provides some protection against rain and avalanches. After 4 hours of trekking, we reach Deurali for our overnight stay. 

Day 9: Trek to Annapurna Basecamp

Above Deurali, the valley widens and it isn’t as steep anymore. We climb through bamboo and birch forest to avoid a dangerous avalanche area, and you can now see the gates to the Annapurna Sanctuary as the mountains start to kick in. We then arrive at Mount Machhapuchhare Base Camp (3700 m). From here you have a ring side view of majestic mountain vistas of Hunichuli, Annapurna South, Annapurna I, Annapurna III (7555 m), Gangapurna (7454 m) and Machhapuchhare. After lunch, we continue to climb for the next 2 hours to reach Annapurna Base Camp (4130 m). We stay in one of the tea-houses at the Base Camp. In the evening, view the spectacular sunset at Machhapuchhare.

Day 10 – Trek to Bamboo

Wake up early in the morning around 5:45 AM to view the sunrise on Annapurna I and walk to the glaciers. Enjoy amazing views of the near-vertical south face of Annapurna towering above the sanctuary and the peaks and glaciers of the Annapurna Himal  including Annapurna I (8 091 m), Annapurna South (7 219 m) and Macchapucchare.  After breakfast, we begin an easy descent to Bamboo and arrive in about 4 hours.

Day 11- Trek to Gangdruk

Today is slightly grueling with a long steep climb back to Chomrong. Although, the scenic backdrop is the ultimate reward for your effort. Astounding views of the Annapurna South, Machhapuchhare, and Hinuchili greet you throughout the trek. We then descend through a steep stone staircase to Jhinudhanda (1780m) where all your aches and pains can be wiped off with a rejuvenating dip in the hot water springs. We then climb for 3.5 hours to reach the Gurung village of Ghandruk (1 939 m), perched on a ridge above the Moda Khola river. Gandruk has an interesting Gurung Traditional Museum. From here you have spectacular views over Annapurna South, Hinuchili, and Macchapucchare.

Day 12- Drive Back to Pokhara

We descend to the bus stop (45 min from our lodge) and drive back to Pokhara. After reaching Pokhara, we will have a porters’ party where we enjoy Nepali songs and dance with our staff.

Day 13- Bus Drive to Kathmandu

The trip is concluded with a bus drive to Kathmandu. Take back only happy memories, that fighting spirit and positivity.

Day 14- Fly out to Kathmandu
Transfer to Tribhuvan Airport and we hope you had a memorable stay and made lots of like-minded new friends.

** This is not a tour where everything can be planned in advance to run like clockwork. You probably won’t experience exactly what is written in the daily itinerary as things can go wrong and often adjustments need to be made while on the trail
